Why the underarms respond best to the laser
Underarm laser hair removal shows results faster than any other zone, and the reason is purely physical. The hair here is dense, dark and thick, meaning it holds a great deal of melanin - the very pigment that absorbs the laser beam. The more pigment, the more efficiently the follicle heats. Size helps too. Both underarms take 5-10 minutes, so the treatment fits into any schedule. At GENEVITY the area is treated on the Splendor X. Fair skin with dark hair is treated at the alexandrite wavelength of 755 nm; for olive or tanned skin the Nd:YAG at 1064 nm is used, which does not 'see' skin pigment and is therefore safe even for darker phototypes. There is a further benefit: daily shaving stops, and with it the irritation, ingrown hairs and darkening of the underarm skin. Many patients notice their skin looking lighter and smoother by the middle of the course, simply because the constant mechanical irritation has ended.

How the session runs
Selecting the wavelength
The physician assesses your phototype and hair density, selects 755 or 1064 nm and delivers a test pulse.
Cleansing the area
The underarms are cleansed of deodorant residue - deodorant must not be applied on the day of treatment.
Laser pass
Each underarm takes two to four minutes. It feels like short hot prickles alternating with the cold of the handpiece cooling.
Aftercare
Panthenol or a soothing gel is applied. Deodorant can be used again after 24 hours.

Results, and what to know about deodorant
Noticeable thinning appears after the second session - the underarms give the clearest response to the laser of any zone. A full course is 5-7 sessions at 4-6 week intervals, after which a few fine hairs remain and are cleared with maintenance sessions every 8-12 months. Deodorant deserves a separate note. It must not be applied on the day of treatment: aluminium salt residue on the skin can overheat locally under the pulse. Deodorant can be used again 24 hours after the session, ideally alcohol- and fragrance-free for the first two or three days. Rules after the treatment: - 48 hours without sauna, swimming pool, hot baths or intensive training - sweat irritates treated skin; - wear loose clothing in natural fabrics for the first days; - no scrubs in the area for a week; - shaving between sessions is fine; plucking is not. If you notice excessive sweating as well as hair growth, mention it to your physician: hyperhidrosis is treated separately, and underarm botulinum therapy combines well with a hair-removal course.

After 24 hours, yes. On the day of the treatment deodorant must not be used before or after: antiperspirant residue on the skin raises the risk of local overheating and irritation. For the first two or three days choose an alcohol- and fragrance-free product.
The area is sensitive because the skin is thin and the hair dense, so the sensation is stronger than on the legs. The session is very short, though - two to four minutes per side - and the handpiece's built-in cooling removes most of the discomfort. As the hair thins with each session, the sensation eases.
Usually yes, as a welcome side effect. Darkening under the arms is generally caused by constant mechanical irritation from razors and wax. Once shaving stops, the skin gradually evens out and lightens. Where hyperpigmentation is marked, the physician can add a separate brightening protocol.
Yes - and this is one of the few areas where summer is not an issue, since the underarms barely tan. The usual limits apply: do not come straight from the beach, and avoid the pool and sauna for 48 hours afterwards.
The odd folliculitis spot does happen in the first days - the area sweats and the follicles are temporarily more reactive after the pulse. It usually clears within two or three days if the skin is kept dry and clothing loose. If the spots are painful or numerous, call us: the physician will examine the area and prescribe a topical treatment.
