How the Laser Works on Post-Acne Scars

Post-acne is more than marks — it is a change in the structure of the dermis. After deep inflammation part of the collagen is destroyed, and atrophic scars of the ice-pick, boxcar, and rolling types form in its place. Cosmetics cannot remove this: the work has to happen in the dermis itself. A fractional CO₂ laser creates microscopic ablation columns in the tissue at a set depth. A zone of thermal effect forms around each one and triggers the synthesis of new collagen. Scar tissue is gradually replaced by ordered tissue — the floor of the scar lifts and its edges soften. At the same time the laser addresses post-inflammatory pigmentation: renewing the epidermis lightens the dark marks left by breakouts. Realistic expectations: - Atrophic scars soften by 50-80% over a course - Rolling and boxcar scars respond best - Deep ice-pick scars need more sessions - The result unfolds gradually over 3-6 months

Post-acne resurfacing is only done once active breakouts are under control. If acne is still active, the doctor treats that first — otherwise new inflammation will create new scars.

How Laser Post-Acne Treatment Works

01

Assessing the scar type

The doctor identifies the type and depth of the scars, the skin condition, and any active breakouts, and takes baseline photos.

02

Preparing the skin

If needed, home care is prescribed 2-4 weeks before the session to lower the risk of pigmentation.

03

Anaesthesia and the laser pass

After topical anaesthesia the doctor treats the scarred areas at a higher density and the surrounding skin in a gentler mode.

04

The healing period

The skin recovers over 5-10 days with redness, flaking, and tightness. Care follows the doctor's protocol.

05

Repeat sessions

The next session follows in 6-8 weeks. The number of sessions depends on how deep the scars are.

FAQ

Restoring the original structure of the skin completely is not possible — that is the honest answer. But over a full course fractional resurfacing softens atrophic scars by 50-80%, and the skin visually reads as even. Rolling and boxcar scars respond best; deep ice-pick scars need more sessions or a combination of methods.

Once there have been no active inflammatory lesions for at least 3 months and the skin is stable. If you have taken isotretinoin, a 6-month pause after finishing the course is required. The doctor sets the exact starting point at your consultation.

The cost depends on the treatment area and the number of sessions in the course. The doctor gives you the exact price at the consultation after examining your skin and assessing the scar type, along with a course plan setting out the sessions and intervals. Current prices are listed in the Prices section.
