How acne phototherapy works

Acne phototherapy treats acne vulgaris with broadband pulsed light. The mechanism is biological rather than cosmetic: Cutibacterium acnes, the bacterium that sustains inflammation inside the sebaceous duct, produces porphyrins. These molecules absorb light in the blue-green spectrum and, once activated, destroy the bacterial cell from within. At the same time, light of a different wavelength acts on the vessels feeding the inflammation, so redness fades and active lesions settle faster. Gentle heating of the sebaceous gland moderately reduces its activity, leaving the skin less oily. At GENEVITY acne phototreatment is performed on the M22 Stellar Black platform. The physician selects the filter and parameters according to the degree of inflammation and your phototype: the same skin needs different settings during a flare and in remission. Phototherapy does not replace medication in severe forms, but it works well on its own for mild to moderate acne - and as a way to shorten a course of drugs under medical supervision.

Indications for acne phototreatment

  • Mild to moderate acne
  • Inflammatory lesions: papules, pustules, redness
  • Oily skin with enlarged pores
  • Post-inflammatory erythema - red marks left after breakouts
  • Intolerance of, or reluctance to take, long antibiotic courses
  • Acne on the back and chest, where topical care is difficult

When phototherapy is not performed

  • A fresh tan or photodermatoses
  • Photosensitising medication or isotretinoin
  • Severe nodulocystic acne, which requires systemic treatment
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • An active herpes outbreak
  • Skin cancer in the treatment area

How an acne phototherapy session works

01

Dermatology assessment

The physician establishes the form and severity of the acne, identifies triggers and decides whether concurrent medication is needed.

02

Skin preparation

The skin is cleansed, a cooling gel applied and protective goggles put on.

03

Light treatment of the zones

The physician passes the handpiece over the affected zones. Each pulse feels like a brief flash of warmth.

04

Soothing aftercare

An anti-inflammatory product and SPF are applied. The physician adjusts your home care and sets the next appointment.

What phototherapy achieves in acne

Fewer inflammatory lesions after just 2-3 sessions

Reduces redness and evens out skin tone

Cuts oiliness and tightens pores

Causes no resistance, unlike antibiotics

No downtime - you can carry on with your day immediately

Suitable for large areas: back, chest and shoulders

Results of acne phototreatment and what comes next

After the first session inflammatory lesions look less red and some of the smaller ones dry out. A brief flare occasionally appears on day two or three, as what was already forming in the ducts comes to the surface. This is an expected stage, not a deterioration. Most patients notice a steady reduction in breakouts from the third or fourth session. A full course is 4-6 sessions two to three weeks apart, after which remission lasts six to twelve months provided home care is done properly. What matters alongside the sessions: - home care prescribed by your physician, not assembled from online advice; - daily SPF 50, since photosensitivity is slightly raised after a session; - avoiding harsh scrubs and alcohol-based lotions; - hormone testing where indicated, since in some patients acne has an endocrine cause. Once the inflammation settles, the marks remain - post-inflammatory pigmentation and atrophic scars. Those are treated with other methods: laser resurfacing for post-acne and microneedling RF. Your physician will advise when to move on to them.

FAQ

A standard course is 4-6 sessions two to three weeks apart. With active inflammation the physician may start with shorter intervals and lengthen them later. The number depends on the severity of the acne, your hormonal status and how consistently you follow the home-care plan.

In mild and moderate acne, phototherapy often makes systemic antibiotics unnecessary. In severe nodulocystic acne it is only an adjunct: medication prescribed by a dermatologist remains the basis of treatment. The decision is always the physician's, after examination.

In some patients, lesions that were already forming in the ducts surface on day two or three. It looks like a temporary worsening, though in fact the process has simply sped up. It lasts a few days and does not recur at later sessions. If it worries you, call us and the physician will assess it.

Yes, but under strict conditions: no fresh tan, SPF 50 daily and minimal direct sun for two weeks after each session. If you have just come back from the coast the physician will postpone the treatment for two to three weeks, as tanned skin carries a higher risk of burns and pigmentation.

With red post-inflammatory marks, yes - light works well on the vascular component. It does not address atrophic scars, which need methods that remodel the dermis, such as laser resurfacing or microneedling RF. The two approaches are often used in sequence.

Yes, from age 16 and with parental consent. Teenage acne often responds well to phototherapy because the inflammatory component is strong. The physician always assesses hormonal status and contributing factors, though: at this age it matters not just to clear the lesions but to understand why they appear.

The price depends on the size of the area - face, back or chest - and on whether you take the full course. Current prices for acne phototreatment are in the Prices section and the administrator will quote them when you book. The physician confirms the final figure after examination, once the number of sessions is set.
