Why Stretch Marks Do Not Fade on Their Own
A stria is a scar formed inside the skin. When tissue stretches faster than collagen can be synthesised, the dermal fibres tear. The tear fills with connective tissue that is thinner, less elastic, and lacks the normal vascular and pigment pattern. That is why creams and massage do not remove stretch marks: the active ingredient does not change the structure of the dermis at a depth of 1-2 mm. Laser stretch mark removal works exactly there. The CO₂ laser beam creates microcolumns of heating in the stria. The damaged matrix partly breaks down, synthesis of new collagen and elastin begins, and the skin over the stretch mark gradually thickens. Yes, though the result is more modest than on fresh pink striae. A white stretch mark no longer has a vascular component, so the work is limited to texture and tissue density. A realistic expectation is a 30-50% reduction in visibility over 4-6 treatments: the stria becomes smoother and less contrasting, but a trace remains.
After breastfeeding has finished and weight has stabilised — usually 6-12 months after birth. It is not done earlier for two reasons: breastfeeding is a contraindication, and unstable weight can produce new striae after the course is complete.
